Primitive Wooden Stool
Description
Likely early 19th Century
14.5" x 13" x 12"
Hand-hewn from thick boards and assembled with square-cut nails, this primitive stool features a carved handhold integrated into the top surface. The low rectangular form and block legs reflect utilitarian construction, while deep tool marks, checking, and wear speak to long, repeated use.
The handhold, which is beautifully softened through handling, reveals how the stool was lifted and carried, reinforcing its origin as a working object rather than furniture. Now this piece reads as artifact and sculpture, carrying a quiet authority through material, weight, and time.
Weight-bearing antique condition with wear consistent with age and use, including a few loosened nails.
